London's Skyline in flux

London regenerationRecently, several bids for various redevelopments in London have been accepted by the mayor and government. London’s skyline is constantly changing to keep up with residential and commercial demands.

A new station at Battersea to connect the northern line to the south west has four contenders bidding to steal the deal. £1bn will be contributed by the government to help aid the development. There will be 3,300 meters of new tunnels and ventilation shafts with a new station at Nine Elms as well as Battersea. Nine Elms is also undergoing a generation aiming to create £16,000 new homes, with the first residents estimated to be in by 2016.

Bank and Monument tube station is the fourth busiest underground station in London with six lines and caters for 96,000 customers during rush hour. By 2021 the upgrade will allow for an increased capacity at Bank Station and a step free route between the Northern line and DLR platforms and street level.

Thomas Heatherwick has designed a pedestrian bridge to link Covent Garden to the South Bank. The designs will be put in for planning next year; however, a private backer needs to be found to finance the project as the government has said that no public money will be available. Thomas Heatherwick designed the 2012 Olympic Cauldron and the new London buses.

A £180 million development deal in Paddington is hoping to start at the end of 2014. Around 355,000 sq ft of offices will be created with the intention to add to and improve the area.

Affordable housing in Greenwich has been reduced to accommodate a £5bn commercial development. Space for affordable housing has been cut from 38% to 25% in the area around the Peninsula. The plans are aiming to create luxury private flats, a four/five star hotel and a private school.
