Flooding Issues

Flooding LondonHome insurance is essential and necessary to keeping you and your home protected from damages and burglaries. Unfortunately it does not cover everything and natural disasters can be a real pain to claim on damages.

Typical natural disaster coverage can (may not always) include:

Fires

Lightening

Damage by windstorm and hail

Smoke damage

Water damage from leaking faucets, burst pipes or damage to a roof from a storm will be covered by most standard insurance policies but when flood damage from a river, or surface water from major rain runs into the house, it is not covered by a standard policy. Many homeowners do not buy flood insurance because they don’t live in a high risk area.

Causes of water damage:

Leaky dishwashers, overflowing washing machines, clogged toilets, broken pipes, faulty dishwashers, leaking roofs, floods, heavy snow and heavy rain.

As soon as water damage occurs, it is essential to clean up as quickly as possible to prevent other damages like mold, wearing of foundations and further health issues.

It is important to evaluate the damage to consider what is need and how to repair and clean up the water damage. There are 3 categories explaining water damage:

Category 1: Clean water - or water that is not a threat to humans like broken appliances or sink overflows

Category 2: Grey water - contaminated water that could cause sickness and harm to humans. This can be due to broken toilets, broken sump pumps, and seepage

Category 3: Black water – unsanitary water which contains bacteria that cause sickness. Due to sewage problems and contamination of standing water.
